How to create a genogram

From a systemic perspective, all characteristics that are used by the Client/Question contributor to describe his relatives, for example
"my grandfather had a lot of respect or my mother was chaotic" are not important.
Of importantance are answers to the question whether there are family secrets, such as fraud, incest or abuse. The genogram is often used as the basis for set-up.

What you need to know?

  • Which place does the question contributor take in the system?
  • How is father and mother?
  • Has the father or mother had a previous relationship?
  • How is that with the grandparents?
  • Have any important events occurred?

Both the genogram an additional information about special events or situations in the family system makes the picture more complete. The following questions can give the first insight into any underlying dynamics.

  • Are there past loves?
  • Are there any special events?
  • Are there addicts in the family?
  • Has there been serious illness?
  • Has there been fraud, prison
  • Is there a family secret?
  • Is there someone who is not spoken about?
  • Who died when?
  • Who was ignored?
