Developing values

Where do values and beliefs, powerful instructions regarding right and wrong, what to do and what not to do, come from? Values and beliefs are formed by:

  • The environment
  • Experiences and events (small or large)
  • Resultats
  • Through knowledge

The four development periods

Your values (and beliefs) are broadly created into 4 periods of your life. The imprint period runs from birth until your about 7 years old. During this time you learn mostly unconscious from your parents. The modeling period runs from your 8th to your 14th year, you will learn to copy (modelling) your friends consciously and unconsciously.. Some of your most important values, the core values are formed when you're about 10 years old. The socialisation period is between your 14th and 21st year. During this period you will learn the values which affect your relationships. In the work socialisation period you take over the values that apply to the company or organisation where you work (especially with strong value-driven organisations such as the army).

Your environment plays an important role, which begins at birth.. Your father and your mother (or your immediate educators) play the largest role in the programming of your initial values. Your parents constantly express their values by telling you what you should or should not do, say and believe. If you accepted their values you were rewarded you, you were a good girl or good boy. If you rejected them you were in trouble, you were then a naughty child.
