The logical levels

Robert Dilts developed the model of the Logical levels based on Gregory Bateson’s book  Steps to an Ecology of Mind. In the processes of learning, change, and communication there are natural hierarchies (logical levels).
This model with logical levels is very helpful in designing an action plan for change, it helps in the understanding of your own and other people's model of the world.

Bateson describes the Logical levels as follows:

  • A higher level organizes the information of the underlying levels.
  • Change at a lower level can accomplish change to a higher level.
  • Change at a higher level will accomplish change to all lower levels.
  • The solution of a problem is usually found on a level higher then the level where the problem occurs.

Alignment is when your skills and your behaviour (in the area that you choose) are congruent with what you are aiming at the highest levels. All levels then work together and support each other.
