Noam Chomsky

Avram Noam Chomsky (Philadelphia - Pennsylvania, 7 December 1928)

Noam Chomsky is an American linguist, philosopher, media critic and professor of linguistics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. As founder of generative linguistics, he is one of the most influential linguists of the 20th century.

Noam Chomsky The core of Chomsky's linguistics is the hypothesis of universal grammar: an innate language ability that all people share explains the similarities between human languages. Chomsky's linguistics is rational (as opposed to empiricist). His insights meant the death blow to the behaviourist linguistics and an incentive for the cognitive sciences.

The work of Noam Chomsky is used by Bandler and Grinder in the development of NLP. In the area of language, Noam Chomsky introduced the terms deep structure and surface structure. According to Chomsky thoughts, concepts and ideas are deep structures that are not related to a specific language, but can be expressed through language (surface structure).

According to Bandler and Grinder the transformation of information from deep structure to surface structure is lost through deletion, distortion and generalisation. It can be concluded that the models of the human world is only through language representations and not the world itself.

Subsequently, Chromsky’s theory of transformational grammar also has impact on the fact that there are multiple levels of deep structures (see logic levels). (see logical levels).
