Overlap technique

Overlap is the process where you make use one representational system to gain access to the other.

This process is used in situations where someone has difficulties coming in to a specific representational system, while this would be desired. You can then take someone from favorite representational system to one of his least favorite representation system.

Example 1:

Someone cannot easily retrieve images (visual representation system) of a particular memory but can easily experience associated sensations (kinesthetic representational system). You can then begin to communicate to the person in the kinesthetic representational system (words, tonality and physiology), then move into the auditory tonal representation system and then into the visual representation system.

K → At →V

Example 2:

Someone cannot easily retrieve images (visual representation system) of a particular memory but has easy access to his internal dialogue (auditory digital representation system). You can then begin to communicate to the person in the auditory system digital representation (words, tonality and physiology), then move into the auditory tonal representation system and then into the visual representation system.

Ad → At → V

Example 3:

Someone cannot easily experience the feelings of a memory (kinesthetic representational system) but can easily retrieve the images. You can then begin to communicate to the person in the visual representation system (words, tonality and physiology), then move in to the auditory tonal representation system and then in to the kinesthetic representational system.

V → At → K

Note - When performing overlap the tonality and predicates are very important!
