Richard Bandler

Richard Wayne Bandler (New Jersey, 24 February 1950)

Richard Bandler is an American NLP trainer, writer and researcher who with John Grinder developed the methodology Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP).

Richard Bandler Bandler grew up in Sunnyvale California, now known as Silicon Valley.

He began his studies in mathematics and finally earned his bachelor's degree in philosophy and psychology (1973) at the University of California at Santa Cruz (UCSC) and his master's degree in psychology at the Lone Mountain College in San Francisco (1975).

In 1972 he was invited by Robert S. Spitzer, editor of Science and Behaviour Books, to help edit the book The Gestalt Approach by Fritz Perls, founder of Gestalt therapy. He also attended courses of Virginia Satir, a famous family therapist. He got to know John Grinder (professor of linguistics) when he accompanied him in giving workshops of Gestalt therapy at the UCSC.

Bandler and Grinder choose people as a model and who were an example in their subject field, to find out what they did different to others. This method is called modeling.

The modeled persons were Fritz Perls, Virginia Satir, Gregory Bateson (a known anthroposophist), Milton H. Erickson (Hypnotherapist and psychiatrist), Moshe Feldenkrais (physicist and neurophysiologist) en Linus Pauling (chemist).

Later he modeled in India Africa and Mexico also yogis and shamans. There developed models such as Design Human Engineering, Shamanistic Engineering and Neuro Hypnotic Repatterning.
